I remember walking into a room full of people. Who were being cross checked for their photo ID’s to see if they are really who they claimed to be. And I also remember not having to go through this rigorous examination and having an almost VIP treatment. I checked through the venue without having to show any ID! By the way, this was a venue of an exam. Where I walked in in my court heels and well pressed blouse and trousers!
You can have anything you want in life, if you dress for it!
Edith Head
This memory says a ton about discrimination at work place. And I learnt a valuable lesson that day on how the real world works. I hate to say this, what we wear and how we look matters! It shouldn’t but it does!
I was like, you know, if you want to be someone big, you have to dress the part!
Iman Shumpert
Ofcourse I condemn the discrimination against people over what they wear and how they look. I do agree that we must dress the part to often make an impact and showcase our character.
I see fashion as a form of self expression. Where you give away key information about your self without having to say a word! Consider your sense of fashion and style as an about section. Where you can exhibit different sides of your character by the clothes and shoes you choose to wear.
I want people to see the dress, but focus on the women.
– Vera Wang
Which is exactly why we have dress codes and different styles of dressing. For example, when on a date you obviously want to seem as someone who is approachable and cheerful. And for the same reason you dress in colours and casual clothing.
But, in an interview, seeming approachable and cheerful isn’t often a priority. At your work place, you would want to come across as disciplined, leader like and confident. Therefore, we must include pieces of clothing and shoes that exhibits a different side of our character.
This self expression is an add-on to the qualification you own. Which sends across a very subtle yet very impactful signal about what you would bring to the table!
Which pretty much was the overall inspiration to this subtle and impactful interview look. By wearing this cawl neck velvet blouse by sassafras and neutral beige H&M cigarate trousers, I am bringing out the confident women out who is fit and efficient at very task.
To add more details and bring out the subtle elegance of a professional look, I have paired the outfit with minimal and dainty jewellery from mesmerize India. (For 10% off on your Mesmerize India orders, use code ‘TAHLIASURAJ’. Valid upto 20 uses)
And finally, to complete the overall look, I hoped in to my black heels from Shein and grabbed my Lino Perros office bag! And just like that the entire outfit came together.
So that was about this interview look and why i think dressing the part often works in our favour. I hope you crack your interview and land your dream job. I will be back again, ofcourse with yet another look but until then stay healthy and stay stylish.
