WHY I ALWAYS KEEP MY SPACE CLEAN

I always keep my space clean. Always. And my obsession with cleanliness stems from the many benefits I have experienced living in a good place that is both aesthetically pleasing and clean.

This was in 2016. It’s been years since that advice and I still carry that lesson with me. Not just for my work but anywhere I am. I keep everything clean. My workstation, my home, and any place I sit! And the following are the five perks I get when I do that

The Mirror Of The Mind

The one thing that I have observed from keeping my space clean is that it directly reflects my mind. When my space is clean, I think clearly. There is no ambiguity, confusion or anxiety, just clarity.

Interestingly, I have also observed that when my mind is cluttered and confused, my room is chaotic. Things are here and there, dust has accumulated and I don’t want to be in that space.

When I was dealing with depression, I had little to no interest in life and that hopelessness often reflected in my room. That’s why people have a depression pit. And the more we give in to that mental space the more hopeless it becomes.

So to me, I must keep my space clean because it directly reflects the state of my mind. I know when there is a mess in my life, I have to begin cleaning. It often starts with physical cleaning and decluttering of my space. And then I see, that everything has suddenly become better.

The Art Of Curation

I like curating an aesthetic life and it begins with curating my space, my mind and myself. And to me, a clean space is often the most aesthetic. It doesn’t quite matter if the things that make up the space are expensive or cheap. If the space is untidy nothing feels aesthetic.

Regardless of how shallow people might think being aesthetic is, I take great care in making my space beautiful. Because beauty makes a place worth living, it invites happiness, comfort, joy, peace, calmness and an appreciation for life. It creates space for a good life.

An anchor for a good life

Like I was saying before, aesthetics is very important because it creates a good life.

Oftentimes I slip into negative thinking. This is a very normal pattern of thought for all human beings. We are wired that way. We have a bias for negative thinking. And when you roll down that rabbit hole, it becomes difficult to return, and that’s exactly why I like to keep my space clean, a clean space is aesthetic and the beauty around me helps me remember I am living a good life.

It becomes a reference point from which I can return to seeing things positively again. And so it becomes important that we keep our space clean.

An invitation to community

When my home is clean, it ignites a feeling to share that beauty with the people in my life. And when we come together for a meal, evening tea, a movie night, or even for chit chat it creates an atmosphere of joy and love, which is beautiful in itself.

I have many memories of my nephew running around the house, my friends and I watching movies, cooking together, and even the family gathering together to talk, it’s so wholesome and worth it.

A luxury of health

A clean home creates an environment that is an absolute condition for good health. It is free of dust, pests, and ants and keeps the space sanitary. It really makes life worth living after all health is one of the real luxuries of life.

Ultimately, my obsession with a clean and aesthetic environment isn’t about vanity or a rigid need for control at all. It is about stewardship. Whether I am at a dental counter or my writing desk, the state of my surroundings is the first boundary I set against the chaos of the world.

A clean space is a silent promise I make to myself every morning, that I am worthy of clarity, that my peace is a priority, and that my home is a sanctuary for the life I am choosing to build.

When we declutter our physical world, we don’t just make room for “things”, we make room for the version of ourselves we’ve always wanted to become.

The lesson I learned in 2016 remains my truth today: Clear the counter, and the mind will follow.
